An out-of-this-world love story . . .

Ros is a supernatural encounter with a female from our cosmos E.T. meets Starman. With the clock ticking, Micki tries to save Ros, who only has a few days left to find her way back home. The bonds of this most unlikely friendship are tested on the run, as they realize that love truly does transcend time and space.

Ros eBook Dee DeTarsio

Such a fun read! I loved this twist on the usual alien-come-to-earth story. The alien is a female. She is discovered - and later befriended and helped - by a human female. Their buddy-girl story is funny, sweet, and touching. The friends discover that, sure, Ros's society may be far more advanced than ours, but we're really not so different after all.

Author DeTarsio's writing style is a delight as well. Take, for example, this passage where Ros tells her new human friend about falling in love: "My higher reasoning center has been unable to rejuvenate. I cannot take nourishment." Isn't that a delightful twist on the ol' "I can't sleep! I can't eat!" cry of the lovelorn?!

I don't LOL very often at books, but this book had me chuckling all the way through. Also loved the very creative and funny ending. And, as an added bonus, the book contains the best use of Journey lyrics ever.

Ros eBook Dee DeTarsio Reviews

Dee DeTarsio may write Chick Lit, but her books are never just that. They always include elements you'd expect in other genres and almost never see in Chick Lit, like action-adventure (which features in both of her books I've read ) or even a science fiction element, as in the alien this book is named after. These additions are fun and entertaining. They allow DeTarsio to take the story in directions you wouldn't typically see in Chick Lit.

Pushing the genre boundaries is fun, but what stood out for me in this book was the sense of humor of the main character, Micki. At least in the beginning, she seems to be lacking in self-esteem and is unhappy with life. She lets people run over her which results in her ex-mother-in-law (who is in a mutual-loathing society with Micki) being dumped on her. But Micki's inner dialogue is always funny and witty, as in this snippet involving Rhoda, her ex-mother-in-law

"No go," Rhoda said. "I think there was a murder in that bathroom. Something died in there. I could not use it. I would not go." And now she's Dr. Seuss? Could you, would you, in your pants? I wanted to scream.

I found Micki's "voice" to be unique from that of Julie Fraser (the protagonist in "The Scent of Jade," the other book of DeTarsio's I've read), which is something most authors have a hard time doing this well for characters who are so different. If you're a fan of Chick Lit and not afraid of the boundaries getting stretched a little, the story of Ros would be a perfect choice.

My interest was caught once I realised that the heroine was not a teenager (thankfully) but a grown women with adult children plus her rescued alien/ET was female. I appreciated the female friendship and bonding that followed but I was disappointed that so many of Michi's and Ros' chats were about men!

The story was fast paced although I had no knowledge of the area or any idea of the distances involved in their travelling. I was interested in the characters, Micki's relationship with her children (that rang very true) even Rhoda grew on me. I found the handsome James a tad unbelievable, but let's hope there are such men out there should a Ros situation every happen. The ending was bizarre in the extreme but kind of gelled with the rest of the fairly preposterous events in the book. Not a laugh out loud book, but I was entertained.
I loved this book and could not put my down while reading it. The story of Ros and Micki is beautifully written. You can feel the friendship and admiration the two characters have towards each other by reading. There were several laugh out loud moments in the story, especially after Jason brings his friend's car to his mom to borrow. That whole trip is a hoot! This is a feel good adventure with drama entwined. Totally will read this one again!
The 2 and 3-star reviews preceding mine nailed my thoughts exactly.

While the author certainly demonstrates a love of wordplay and wisecracking humor, it got extremely tiresome about half-way through the book and felt like she was simply trying too hard to inject a laugh into almost every conversation or internal monologue.

Initially I thought the storyline was novel and somewhat cute; as the book went on (and on) it verged on silly--- kind of a combination of old sci-fi movies, fortune cookie philosophizing and a sitcom laugh-track.

In fairness to Ms. DeTarsio, she gave the reader a very human portrait of the main character Micki. However, the incessant focus on Micki's failings in love and personal life presented with a self-deprecating humor were a definite turn-off. Sometimes her actions were too frustratingly idiotic for words.

Ros' story was more engaging but never sufficiently developed. I did love the denouement.

In contrast to another reviewer, I couldn't stand the (ex) mother-in-law Rhoda and found that her constant carping/sniping set my nerves on edge---I felt like "whapping her up-side the head" as we used to say in high school.

I vacillated between a 2 and 3 star rating. Most of the first half of the text was relatively typo free and then I encountered "breaks" for "brakes," "in plain site" and "gripping her tiny waste" (which was unintentionally funny given Ros' excretory function.) There were a couple of grammatical errors such as "over who's desires" or the occasional missing word, but generally Ms. DeTarsio's use of English was refreshingly accurate, thus earning the third star.
